Regarding the selected artists and the historic context, the edition “40yearsvideoart.de” concentrates on West Germany. Yet extensive work in Media Art also occurred in the GDR. Filmmakers produced 8/16mm films. Unofficially, original productions were completed. An independent art language developed as a phenomenon parallel to Video Art in the Federal Republic of Germany. The exhibition project undertakes a revision of the turbulent and creative 1980s in the 8/16mm film scene of the GDR, and includes works by a.o. Lutz Dammbeck, Else Twin Gabriel, Jörg Herold, Via Lewandowsky, Yana Milev, Ulrich Polster. A selection of 'underground films' are shown at accompanying events. Talks with artists and contemporary witnesses reflect the works in their context.
